Core Insight
Perplexity's breakthrough isn't better search β it's eliminating the "ten blue links" paradigm entirely. By providing synthesized answers with inline citations, they transformed search from "finding pages" to "getting answers."
My Analysis
What makes Perplexity interesting from a product lens:
- Citation-first design β every claim is backed by a numbered source. This builds trust in AI-generated content in a way that ChatGPT's approach doesn't.
- Follow-up questions β the suggested follow-ups create a research workflow, not just a single query. It turns search into exploration.
- Pro Search β the step-by-step reasoning display builds user confidence and creates a "working with you" feeling.
The risk: they're competing with Google's distribution advantage using a fundamentally better product. History says distribution usually wins, but the product gap here is unusually large.
